Story
Groundwork NE & Cumbria run a Men's Shed project in Middlesbrough for local men to provide them with a space to learn new, and share existing, horticulture and other practical skills (maintenance, construction, carpentry, etc.) whilst encouraging social interaction and with clear outcomes to participants health and wellbeing.
The Men’s Shed is aimed at male participants of all ages and backgrounds, particularly welcoming those who face social isolation or loneliness, or those who are at higher risk of developing long term health problems due to an unhealthy diet, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption or mental health problems.
Groundwork established the ‘Shed’ and started weekly activities facilitated by two members of staff on the 11th April 2017. The sessions run on Tuesday mornings from 10am – 12pm at Berwick Hills Community Allotment on Bradhope Road, Middlesbrough. The project was officially launched on 23rd May at an event with over 10 participants and 33 staff from funders, partner or referral organisations attending.
With future funding we want to keep this project going and continue to the good work and progress the Shedders are making. We would like to help the group become self sustaining with volunteers from the group running the sessions which would allow them to take ownership of the group and continue to help local men in the community.
