Story
Michael McIntyre suffered a severe stroke on the 3rd February 2018 and has since been in NHS care - first at the acute ward of the John Radcliffe and then at a rehab clinic in Abingdon. The right side of his brain has been damaged, leaving the left side of his body now paralysed and his eyesight impaired.
Although Michael has made significant improvements in terms of his mobility and cognitive recovery, he remains unable to go home due to him still needing professional care and further specialised rehabilitation therapy.
As the NHS now only offers Michael further subsidised support in a care home with an hour of physio a week, it has been his family’s decision to transfer him to a private stroke rehabilitation hospital for a limited stretch of time where he’ll undergo many more hours of intensive physio and other healing therapies in better facilities.
Since 17 May he has taken up residence in the Raphael Hospital in Kent. It is a private neuro-rehab hospital with a unique anthropological approach meaning Dad will receive physio, OT sessions as well as hydrotherapy, art and music therapy, acupuncture and massage. We hope that three months of further intensive rehabilitation here will give him the best chance to get back on his feet and regain his independence.
Michael is not only a fantastic father to his three girls but also a highly respected practitioner, who has dedicated 40 years of his life to helping others through acupuncture and herbal treatment. He’s longing to go home and resume his life and work again. His spirits are high, and he’s showing all the necessary determination and willpower to recover.
Many have reached out to us over the last few months asking how they can help. Any contribution would be hugely appreciated by Michael and his family. Donations can be made anonymously if preferred.
