Story
Hello, I am undertaking the #walk1000miles challenge this year to raise funds for a wider charity project which my daughter Elizabeth is involved. The funds I raise will contribute specifically to wildlife conservation and reforestation. The jungle bordering the Kinabatangan River is one of the most biologically important areas of
the world, yet it is also one of the most damaged and vulnerable due to logging and the palm oil
industry.
This environment is home to nine different species of primate, including critically endangered
Orangutans and Proboscis monkeys; a large-nosed monkey that can only be found in Borneo.
The forest is also teeming with a wide variety of other animals including elephants, Sun bears,
Clouded leopards and hundreds of species of bird.
Since 2009 Camps International have been working with the community of Batu Puteh to regenerate the most
damaged parts of the jungle through an extensive reforestation programme. Volunteers (my daughter) will involved in collecting and planting seeds, rearing saplings and transplanting established plants
into the jungle. So far, we estimate that we have planted more than 100,000 trees along the banks
.
