I feel very privileged to be offered this opportunity to travel to Kenya in partnership with my university and the charity MaaChild. I feel strongly that more awareness around the subject of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) should be spread. To be able to educate the women in Kenya about this illegal procedure would be culturally beneficial and a great experience for me in tackling this subject. After reading some journal articles about FGM on the Massai women/girls I understand that there is a big divide on this subject as it interferes with cultural traditions, religion and communities.
This would be a once in a lifetime trip for me and I have the full support from my husband who will care for our children whilst I'm away. Being a mum I never thought I would get this chance I have always wanted to go abroad with a charity organisation and offer help in whatever capacity I can so to help educate and offer assistance in the clinic with pregnant women would be amazing.
I would be able to transfer this experience into my midwifery practice when back home because I would feel more experienced in this subject and it would heighten my cultural and communication skills. I feel the trip would enhance my midwifery and life skills for the better. I'm asking for people to donate as little or as much as they can to help me fulfill this fantastic opportunity.
Any additional funds raised will go towards helping my other fellow student midwives and putting a child through secondary education.
