Story
What I have is a condition called Muscle Tension Dysphonia. In my case it means that, since having surgery on my vocal chords, I have developed a technique of speaking that uses the wrong muscles. Which in turn causes drastic exhaustion in my neck, jaw and throat, manifesting as pain, tension and hoarseness. Increasingly I am often unable to use my voice.
It is not recommended that I rest my voice, as this can make the muscles weaker and more prone to further injury. But the technique that I employ as a matter of instinct is also harmful and causes regular injury and strain.
The amount of therapy required to fully overcome this problem is daunting, I am told it will require the following regular treatment;: osteopathy - acupuncture - muscular Manipulation - deep tissue massage - speech & language therapy - vocal coaching.
All of which will total over £3,500 in treatment fees.
I am on the waiting list for a Speech & Language therapist with the NHS. But unfortunately they do not have a specialist in MTD available.
I am learning to adapt to restricted vocal use, but to overcome this fully, I need to take a course of action far beyond my financial capabilities.
