Weʼve raised £5,075 to Help cover the cost of Mick Gallaghers funeral - a care worker in Scotland who died due to Covid-19 on 9th April aged 34

Funded on Sunday, 7th June 2020

    Story

On the 9th of April 2020, Michael “Mick” Gallaghers life was tragically cut short when he suddenly died due to Covid-19.

He leaves behind his partner (John), mother (Christine), and an abundance of close friends and family.

In life Mick worked as a carer and had aspirations of some day becoming a nurse; a fitting career for such a warm, kind hearted person.

At the time of writing, carers in Scotland are unfortunately not eligible for the same death in service payments as their counterparts in England & Wales if they die due to Covid-19.

Therefore, we want to show our support to Mick’s loved ones during this difficult time by raising funds to help cover the costs of his funeral.

Mick’s story was recently covered by Ciaran Jenkins for Channel 4 news - https://www.channel4.com/news/coronavirus-carers-in-scotland-not-eligible-for-death-in-service-payment

      Update from the Page owner

We're absolutely speechless and can't believe that so many people have donated. This page was set up in response to requests from wonderful people who wanted to donate to show their support following the broadcast of Mick's story on Channel 4. We never expected to reach the 100% target let alone 300% Christine & John have been reading the kind words left in the comments. Thank you so much for your support, those kind words have brought some comfort to the family.

Mick, and carers like him, truly are heroes to selflessly look after our elderly and vulnerable and hopefully his story will go some way to pushing the government to do something to recognise the contribution that carers make and to help families in Scotland that have lost their hero to this terrible virus.

From John (Mick's Partner): I and Christine want to say thank you to everyone that gave something for Mick.  We’re truly blown away and humbled that in just a few hours we’ve raised enough to pay for Mick’s funeral.   I was rather nervous about sharing Mick’s story because to him, it was all part of the job.  We’re so pleased that his story has touched so many of you.
