Story

Update: 12th November 2024, we deeply regret to inform you of Mick Howell's passing. Mickvember will continue, unfortunately now in memory of this wonderful man.

Here's what we will continue to try and achieve with Mickvember:

Join Us in Supporting Mickvember! 🧡

At Plumbco and Goodey and Howell, we’ve always been driven to raise funds for important causes like Breast Cancer Awareness and Marie Curie. Now, we're coming together for a deeply personal cause - Mickvember, a month dedicated to our friend and colleague Mick Howell.

Why Mickvember?

In August 2024, Mick, affectionately known as "Mick the Lick," received the life-altering diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease (MND). For those unfamiliar, MND is a relentless disease that affects the nerves controlling movement, causing muscles to weaken progressively. It has no cure and can rapidly impact the lives of those affected, as well as their loved ones. This year, we also mourned the passing of Rugby player Rob Burrows to MND, which brought much-needed awareness to the disease. We’re driven to continue that momentum — for Mick, for Rob and everyone impacted by MND.

Mick

Many of you will have known him as 'Mick The Lick', a characterful chap who would light up any room that he entered! He has been known to take over the dance floor with his 'shifting' about and has made so many people laugh and smile over the years with his infectious sense of humour! Many of our team recall the times that Mick asked a site agent or plumber to help him get the goods off his van and his constant "do you know who my son is" - reminders to everyone he came into contact with that his son is Plumbco's (now-retired) Director, the lovely Karl Howell.

How We’re Supporting Mick

We’re rallying to raise £5,000 to support Mick's care needs, including funding a specialised electric chair. This £3,800 chair (with £1,000 kindly contributed by the MND Association) will give Mick some well-needed freedom of travel and his family and friends can assist with his transport and comfort.

*Update: The funds raised from Mickvember will be donated directly to Micks family for his funeral care. Any remaining funds will be donated by the family to charities MND & Men’s Mental Health Charity, Movember.

Men’s Mental Health

Our teams wanted to include this in our fundraising efforts and many have embraced the spirit of Movember by shaving off beards and moustaches on November 1st.

Our Mickvember Challenges

Our teams are stepping up with special challenges, including:

* The Big Bike Off: Plumbco Northampton vs. Wellingborough, battling it out for the most miles on an exercise bike, pedalling continuously from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm!

* 26.3-Mile Walk: This journey to and from our branches is a testament to Mick’s dedication and support.

How You Can Help

Your support can make all the difference. Whether large or small, your donation will contribute directly to Mick’s care and to raise awareness for MND and Men’s Mental Health. Every pound brings us closer to our goal.

Stay tuned for Mickvember updates! We’ll keep you posted throughout Mickvember on our progress and upcoming events.

Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for your generosity, compassion, and support for Mick. Let’s make a real difference together!

👉 Dig deep and donate — let’s hit that £5,000 target!
