    Story

Sarah Wilson was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and secondary tumours in her spine in January. She is mother to our 15-year-old son, Jake, and my better half for almost 17 years. She was in hospital for 3 months after major spinal surgery but will not survive this terrible illness. The surgery means at the moment she is mobile with a Zimmer frame, or sometimes a stick, but finds everyday things very difficult and painful. The stairs in our home are very steep so we are terribly worried she'll soon be confined to a bed in a room downstairs, with a commode and no proper washing facilities.

Sarah is finally home from the wonderful spinal unit at Salford Royal. We, her family and friends, are desperate for her to be close to the things that matter to her. Sarah is being incredibly positive and immensely brave. She's started a brand new type of biologic chemo drug which is good news, but is bracing herself for some gruelling radiotherapy at the Christie.

Our home is old and eccentric, so it’s difficult for a disabled person to navigate. We have no downstairs bathroom or toilet, but we have found what we think is a good solution: a modest garden room built at the back of the house, with space for a disabled wet room. It will be a space where she'll be able to look out onto her treasured garden. At £20,000, it's way beyond what we as a family can afford. So we are hoping against hope that supporters will step in to make this happen.

She has had all her favourite past-times taken away from her: working in the garden or the allotment, walking in the countryside, and things as simple as jumping in the car to visit family and friends. So being able to sit, feeling like she’s in the garden and watch the birds, will give her a lot of pleasure.

We don't know how long Sarah has to live, but we want to make her time as comfortable as possible. Please share this page with anyone who might be interested in helping us. Thank you.

Very sorry to hear about this Mike. I was also at journalism college with Sarah in 1986 and we all had some great times together. Hope you manage to reach your target.

I'm so sad to hear how unwell Sarah is. The garden room will bring an enormous amount of pleasure to Sarah, Jake and yourself. You are all in my thoughts. Best wishes.
