Story

In April 2025, my dad Douglas – known to most as Doug, was diagnosed with bowel cancer at the age of 73. A proud, quietly strong man, he faced his diagnosis with immense bravery. On April 25th, Doug underwent major surgery to remove a large cyst, part of his bowel, and 18 inches of intestine.

Unfortunately, complications followed. He required emergency surgery and spent time in intensive care, relying on a central line and tube feeding and other serious medication. He was later fitted with a stoma bag – a life-changing adjustment that he continues to come to terms with. While we’re proud to say Doug is now cancer-free, the journey hasn’t ended. Like so many others, he’s still navigating the mental and physical challenges that follow.

Cancer doesn’t just affect the body—it takes a massive toll on the mind. For patients and their loved ones, the journey through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery is filled with uncertainty, fear, and emotional exhaustion.

On Monday 15th September 2025, Doug's son-in-law Damien, along side a small group of friends and family will walk 155 miles from the Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow to Stadium of Light in Sunderland to raise vital funds for Cancer Research UK and Mind.

Our hometown club, Sunderland, so close to our hearts – to Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow, Doug and my lifelong team.

This event is about more than distance—it’s about acknowledging the invisible weight that people carry when cancer enters their lives. The stress, anxiety, grief, and trauma that patients and their families endure are often overlooked.

Why Mental Health Matters in Cancer Care: Every person touched by cancer faces a different kind of fight—a silent one that includes fear, uncertainty, and often isolation. Families watch helplessly as their loved ones suffer, while patients must adjust to life-altering changes. Mental health support is essential in helping people cope, process, and find strength to move forward.

We want to change the conversation. We want to raise awareness. And most importantly, we want to raise money that provides real help.

This walk is for every family touched by cancer. For every person who has suffered in silence. For every moment when strength meant asking for help. Let’s walk together—for hope and for change.

We sadly cannot create a fundraising page through JustGiving for both charities simultaneously. We have chosen the option of personal cause. Once all events are completed we will withdraw funds directly and split the funds equally between Cancer Research UK and Mind.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving - they'll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. It's the most efficient way to donate and saves time and costs.
