Story
Milo is currently in Ward 3 in the Great North Children’s Hospital in Newcastle. This is somewhere that we will be calling home for the next few months.
Milo was a happy healthy baby and we didn’t think anything was wrong. He developed a cough at 2 months old but could not seem to shift it, also after taking him to be weighed regularly he was putting on weight but not a lot of it. We then ended up in Hull Royal Hospital where lots of tests were taken and it came to light that Milo was born with a severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), which means his body is unable to properly fight off infection. The condition is very rare with on average of only 15-20 people having the condition a year.
The only way of keeping these ‘bubble babies’ safe from infection is to care for them in a ‘bubble’, a high tech sterile room, and their only chance of survival is to give them a completely new immune system. We have to be so careful and make sure everything is clean and sterile, the hardest thing of all is we can’t even kiss Milo not anywhere.
Milo will be going through chemotherapy and then go on to have a stem cell transplant. The work done by all the nurses, doctors and staff on the ward is amazing they will do anything for us.
The Bubble Foundation supports the unit that Milo is currently receiving treatment on and therefore we would like to raise as much money to help them help him!
The charity’s fundraising aims are twofold: to help care for and support current patients and their families and to find invaluable research into the condition to find more effective treatments and ultimately a cure. For more information please visit www.bubblefoundation.org.uk.
Lots of family & friends have been asking how they can help and this is one way they can help us and other families in a similar situation. We would appreciate any donations or fundraisers to help towards this amazing charity that are helping us as a family get through this.
We are all keeping strong and working together to get Milo home!
