Story
The four of us, Simon, Suzy, Darren & Harry are the "Misfits for the Challenge" team and are going to complete a Spartan Beast race on the 30th September in Windsor. The Spartan Beast is a 12/14 mile race with 30/35 obstacles.
We know Dexter's family and really wanted to do something that will help Dexter get outside and enjoy the garden with all of them. His family really believe this could make a real difference to his condition and the way he can be included in the kind of family activities that the rest of us take for granted, playing with his big sister and enjoying the sunshine and fresh air.
We really hope you will continue to read their story and find it a worthy cause to sponsor us in our efforts to make a difference to Dexter and his family.
“There is nothing more beautiful than someone who goes out of their way to make life beautiful for others.”
After Dexter's Mum, Gemma, suffered a silent placental abruption Dexter was born in an emergency not breathing, and with no pulse. Doctors raced to save his life and after several attempts he was resuscitated.
Dexter suffered Hypoxia and this has left him with moderately severe brain damage.
This is the first time Gemma (Mum) held Dexter in hospital.
Since then, their lives have been turned upside down and Dexter suffers from Cerebral Palsy resulting in little mobility, feeding problems, gastro issues and epilepsy. As a family they fight every day to give Dexter as much intervention as possible in the hope that one day he will be able to live a full independent life. Things that they once took for granted are now magnificent celebrations, such as holding an object, standing in a frame and taking off a sock. Dexter is a bright cheerful little boy with an abundance of energy and will. He is so motivated to do and play but his body is just not able to work for him. But when you see him and the way he reacts to his family or people he knows he is such a delight as his face just lights up and brings the room to life.
This summer brought the family a big obstacle in that the sun came out and they wanted to take Dexter in his wheelchair out into the garden to explore, and play. It took 3 people to get Dexter out of the back door in his chair, They have a large step out from their back door onto the grass coupled with the wheels getting stuck in the uneven terrain.
We wholeheartedly believe that every family and their children should be able to enjoy the outdoors, and Dexter to be able to have further sensory experiences and do what other children do with ease.
We all take the little things for granted and it is not until you experience this sort of event or know a family that has that you stop and think, how would I cope, who would help us?
We would like to think someone would help us and our family if the need ever arose so we wuold really like to do something to help them to level their garden, lay astro turf and install ramps both front and rear to allow more practical movement in and out of the house.
Gemma and Darren (Dexter's Dad) never expected that they would need to do these things so that Dexter could have the same experiences as any other child and there current situation does not make it posible for them to enhance their outside space. If you could help us to help them then please sponsor us, as much or as little as you can. It all helps.
Thank you for taking the time to read their story.
