Story

NNEdPro's Mobile Teaching Kitchen Initiative is a multifaceted and innovative intervention to address malnutrition and diet-related challenges. It tackles malnutrition by empowering communities and sharing knowledge and skills through the medium of nutrition education. The Mobile Teaching Kitchen aims to enhance the health and wellbeing of women, children and families across communities, especially working within marginalised and underserved communities.

The MTK at a glance

- The Mobile Teaching Kitchen (MTK) model is an innovative alternative to failing food systems and aims to address malnutrition among the underprivileged and vulnerable population to ensure food and nutrition security for all.

- Local volunteers and health practitioners collect demographic information and evaluate the nutrition status of participants at baseline.

- Collation and co-creation of extensive recipes with the communities, reflecting what they need to eat and what they want to eat - partnered with the MyFood24 app for dietary assessment.

- Develop powerful behavioural changes for improved nutrition knowledge, attitudes and practice (KAP): empowering marginalised communities to gain livelihood while improving overall nutritional health.

- Women from the marginalised communities in Kolkata are trained to become ‘nutrition champions’ and culinary health educators using the See-One, Do-One, Teach-One (SODOTO) model.

- Formation of a micro-enterprise – empowering women to develop micro-businesses to generate income, become financially secure to sustain a healthier lifestyle and help them raise themselves out of intergenerational poverty.

- The nutrition education imparted is a more traditional storytelling manner - through cooking demonstrations and nutritious and cost-effective menu templates.

- The programme has received various awards for completed work, including the Society for Nutrition Education and Behavior Nutrition Education Program Impact Award, Glenmark Nutrition Award, Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Impact Acceleration Award, British Medical Association Research Charities Award, Global Challenges Research Fund Joint Award and many more.

- Currently, MTK activities are in operation in Kolkata, Delhi and Punjab, and with funding, further adaptations are planned for other parts of India.

- MTK Models adapted in Mexico and being implemented in the US in 2023. Other International adaptations are also being planned in multiple countries utilising 12 regional networks spanning six continents.

- For every six champions trained, up to 24,000 members are served annually to the public with access to healthy, tasty and low-cost meals that meet all their nutritional requirements.

We Are Crowdfunding to Support the Continuity of the Mobile Teaching Kitchens

We first need to ensure that the Mobile Teaching Kitchen has the means to run by adequately equipping the facilities and providing further training and materials. But we would also like to establish additional Mobile Teaching Kitchen units to reach the communities in need. Here is what your funds would support:

Just £10 can help purchase basic supplies (teaching ingredients, e.g. vegetables, fruit, grains) and utensils to run the Teaching Kitchen workshops.

£20 (or more) can help towards the provision of electricity, gas, clean water, vehicle maintenance, health and safety, OR continuation of training for local mothers.

£100 (or more) can contribute towards labour costs to support the project.

£5000 can purchase a second Mobile Teaching Kitchen unit.

(All donations will go directly towards the project in India).

How does the MTK Initiative work?

The Mobile Teaching Kitchen operates by providing nutrition education to local “Champions'' and, potentially, microenterprise systems allowing participants to set up their own small businesses. The MTK travels to different parts of the cities and connects with the local community, creating awareness about healthy nutrition practices and passing on necessary nutrition education and skills required to make their daily meals healthier and prevent nutrition-related diseases.

The Initiative was conceptualised in 2017 and launched in 2018 in 2 slum communities in Kolkata – RG Kar and Chetla. Following unprecedented success in 3 years, NNEdPro partnered with Calcutta Rescue in 2021 to maximise the impact and work of MTK in 6 other communities (Bagbazar subdivided into Bagbazar-I & Bagbazar-II, Nimtala, Mechua, Local Bustee, Jyotinagar and Lal Mandir). This collaboration utilises Calcutta Rescue’s established street medicine presence across Kolkata to work towards sustainably reversing stunting and other forms of malnutrition.

Research produced by the MTK has shown it to be successful in transferring the skills and education involved in cooking and nutrition.

Where is the Initiative now?

In 2022, NNEdPro adapted the MTK activities in Delhi (along with Vertiver) to educate and empower women (in East Delhi) in nutrition education and build a better future for themselves and their communities. An MTK adaptation has also been rolled out in rural Punjab (Sanghol) in collaboration with Lord Rana Foundation Charitable Trust (Cordia Colleges) to impact the lives of women from the rural and urban areas to train them to become the change agents for nutrition education in their societies as well. Depending on donations and funding, further potential adaptations are planned in other regions of India.

NNEdPro has partnered with the University of East Anglia and local Indian NGOs to work with tribal and indigenous communities (Santhal Paraganas) in east India (Jharkhand) on Nutritional Awareness to improve their Dietary Practices for Health and Resilience.

Over 2021-22, a highly successful adaptation of the MTK initiative has been implemented by Tec de Monterrey in Mexico, leading to the internationalisation of this model. In 2022, following the Society for Nutrition Education and Behaviour Award for the Mobile teaching Kitchen Initiative and a donation from the Jampolis Family, we initiated a US adaptation of the MTK model in New York City and Washington, DC in 2023.

Your support can create sustainable change

Supporting the Mobile Teaching Kitchens initiative means supporting a project that is tackling malnutrition (both undernutrition and overnutrition) at the grassroots level.

Mobile Teaching Kitchens are turning research into real-world results for a healthier, empowered and more sustainable world. However, we need your support for this innovative project and enable ‘Champions’ to continue improving nutritional awareness and diet quality whilst generating income for themselves. We, therefore, urge you to please share the campaign with your friends, family and networks!

About NNEdPro

NNEdPro Global Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health is an independent not-for-profit organisation that believes everyone has the right to good nutrition. We provide direct support to vulnerable families and communities on the ground, and our education programme trains frontline healthcare professionals and dietitians around the globe.

NNEdPro advocates that equity, collaboration, and technology will be key to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger. Unlike other organisations, we research and influence whole food systems: from production through to consumption and beyond into healthcare.

We aim to achieve significant behavioural change from food producers and professionals, governments and policymakers, healthcare professionals, and the public. Despite our modest resources, we have the potential to become the world’s leading provider of nutrition education and have already helped many thousands of families and communities around the world enjoy improved diets every day.
