Story

As most of you are aware I am currently volunteering in Cambodia teaching English with Hope School, which is situated south of Phnom Penh in the province of Takéo.

This cause is something that has really touched me. To witness families not being able to bring in a substantial income to even cover the basics like food, fresh water or even medication, which is something most of us take for granted. Unfortunately they rely on us volunteers and go fund me pages to help them maintain there monthly needs, as they are unable to do so themselves, due to illnesses or lack of work (please see below each families story).

The schools food bank is designed to reach the deep foundations of poverty in bakod village. Help sustain families and make them self sufficient. To provide up to 9 families with these essentials for one month it only cost $500, which in comparison isn’t even half the amount we earn on a monthly basis. So a small amount of money can really go along way here.

Biad’s story -

Biad lives with her daughter and son-in law and grandson. Her son-in law provides the only income as a builder, and the family have recently sold their main rice field in order to pay for a new basic house. The main reason, however, that the family are part of the food bank is due to biad’s physical condition. Having had a damage to her spine whilst giving birth to her daughter 33 years ago; biad has been paralysed from the waist down since she was 20. She is now 53 and spends every hour of the day lying down on a wooden bed, unable to move. Her daughter works as a full time minder for her mother and her baby son, meaning she is unable to earn an income of any sort. The main goal is to help this family with biads healthcare, which is an ongoing need.

Nhor’s Story -

Nhor lives in Bakod village with her husband. When she was younger she was very affluent, however her children have since sold her land, taken her money and left her with nothing. She now lives in an opened air, tiny hut with no kitchen or toilet. They have no source of income. Nhor also suffers from many health problems, for which she needs a lot of medication.
