Story
Loving Humanity is a non-profit organisation, created to support Syrian refugees. Particularly focusing on the health and well being of girls and women.
The charity was founded by Amy Peake in 2014, when she saw this photo and said:
"I am married with three children. When I saw this picture I thought, what if I were there? How would I cope with no food, no water, no shelter, no access to medicine? What if my husband had been killed and I had to fend for my children alone? How would I deal with all of this – and then on top have my period with no sanitary towels? Panic springs to mind…"
They aim to alleviate health problems associated with the lack of good quality and affordable sanitary pads. They aim to restore dignity and create social uplift by creating employment for groups of women refugees. There are sanitary pads distributed around the camps but they are very poor quality and there aren't many, they are also very expensive given the money they have to live on. Therefor, the women use rags to save their money for food and shelter, this then leads to infection.
Amy went to India to meet Mr Muruga who has invented a clever machine, allowing women to make cheap but good sanitary towels. One machine can employ up to five women, giving them independence and a vital source of income. As well as sanitary towels, they will also be able to produce incontinence pads to help cope with the bed-wetting experienced by older, traumatized children. There are a further 1,000 vulnerable people in the camp who need incontinence pads; primarily the elderly, disabled and war-wounded.
Syrian refugee women and girls still need sanitary pads too and your donations can go along way to help stop infection and make life easier for the refugee women.
