Story

Thank you for considering supporting the MOMS@SRILANKA Appeal and our 2018 trip to Sri Lanka.

Why do we need money?

We are a small team of doctors and midwives from East London (15)- travelling are to Sri Lanka this November to run two obstetric emergency skills courses for 10 days. We are asking for money to support this endeavor. This is our very first course in Sri Lanka but we have already hospitals in South India. On our last course in November 2017 ten of us trained 93 doctors, nurses and midwives to deal with emergencies and develop safer childbirth techniques.

Why is this important?

The day of giving birth/being born is the most dangerous day for women and babies in the world. The overwhelming majority of women and babies who die on that day die needlessly: because there are not the resources to save them, or because those looking after them simply don’t do the right thing in an emergency.

Why should I give money?

Because we are a tiny charity and every penny really counts! We have no overheads as our time is donated. We do everything ourselves. We have a history of delivering these courses, and have previously found that the learning given in them sticks. The intervention is sustainable as in addition to delivering training ourselves we also train participants to be trainers themselves, resulting in courses for others within the institutions we visit and those nearby.

What will we spend it on?

Not on our pay – we are on leave! Money goes to fund the cost of transporting us and our equipment; of providing teaching materials; and evaluating the program.

What we do

Training: Maternity emergencies require fast, safe and coordinated responses by a trained multiprofessional team. We have developed a maternity critical critical care training package to use around the world!
