    Story

Giving Moorbred Exmoor ponies good opportunities! In 2013 we started the Moorland Exmoor Foal Project to help give wild-born moorbred Exmoor pony foals a good start in life. Exmoor ponies are an endangered breed. Because they’re born 'wild and free' it’s not easy to find people willing and able to take and tame them and there can be a limited window to find good homes. We use a positive, trust-based horsemanship approach to win the ponies confidence and friendship, including working at liberty, free from ropes and restraint. This helps the ponies to successfully adapt to life off the moors.
They run in herds, with free access to barns, corrals and grazing. Our care and management system is geared to fulfil the ponies needs for company, space and stimulation. With ponies ranging from foals to veterans born on and off the moor, the foal project has evolved into the Exmoor Pony Project.
We fund the project ourselves with some donations from supporters. We’re not a charity because we don’t want to present this work as a ‘rescue’. It's more about offering these important native ponies good opportunities & understanding. We work with other farmers and the authorities to improve moorland management, breeding practices, registrations, genetics research and development and promotion of the ponies.
Our Exmoor ponies enjoy agility activities and take part in our pony workshops and events to help people to better understand Exmoor ponies. We'd like to train more of them to take part in pack horse walks on Exmoor next year, where people can join us.
With over 25 Exmoor ponies living on the farm, the project requires considerable time and resource to run and we’d like to raise funds to help with the looming winter costs. These include their care and management, feed, training, handling and equipment, etc.
Your support is very much appreciated - thank you!

A very big thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Just Giving Appeal to help with winter costs for the Exmoor Pony Project (Moorland Exmoor Foal Project) winter costs. The project is not only directly helping and caring for Exmoor ponies - from foals to veterans, it is also promoting better understanding of the breed and how to tame, handle and train the ponies using kind, trust-based methods - and providing advice and support to owners and enthusiasts. Your support is hugely appreciated - thank you!

Another gorgeous moorbred Exmoor pony colt foal has joined us. He is accompanied by his semi-feral mother so he can enjoy a gradual weaning before she returns to the moor.

Well done, Dawn and Nick, for campaigning against multiple hot branding and exclusion from full pedigree registration on the flimsiest of criteria. It has taken true courage and commitment.
