Update: Due to a lack of engagement from Highways and Central Beds Council we have had to increase our target to enable us to purchase shelters and stables for the Ponies and the Sheep.
You amazing people have blown us away. hopefully we can now purchase two temporary sheep pens. We gave found a more permanent home for the animals until The Spring but it has no shelters or enough stables for all the ponies until the council can fix their flood defences and make reparations to the farm.
We have a long way to go - the horses will need new shelters if there are none available where we move and we may need to make new fences and fixed pens and shelters. I cannot thank everybody enough for their support.
Following the severe flooding from the A421 all the residents of Moreteynes Retreat were displaced. The drainage system managed by the local council failed immediately and within 15 minutes the farm was under chest high water. Miniature Ponies had to swim out of the stables across the field and the sheep had to be carried out.
This is the second time the farm has been flooded from A421 and to date no reparations have been made to the blocked balancing ponds and drainage. It has taken 9 months and considerable cost to get Moreteynes Retreat to a stage of recovery and on Sunday night everything was lost from animal feed to all the building tools and materials that were washed away when the floodwater surged.
At the moment the animals who have lived together for many years have been displaced. Ponies have been separated and are living temporarily thanks to the kindness of locals.
On the night of the flood some 50+ local neighbours and volunteers came and waded through the water carrying sheep to safety. Many staying to the early hours to ensure the animals safety. The community was amazing and we cannot thank them enough. Their selflessness is the only reason why we did not lose a single animal on Sunday.
Other local residents have asked whether there was a place they could donate to as they were unable to help with such physically taxing work so I have created this Just Giving page to raise the funds needed to relocate the animals to temporary housing.
Now we are trying to bring the animals back together. The farm will take some time to recover and the balancing ponds and drainage issues need to be made fit for purpose before we can risk bringing them home.
We have found a temporary location for them but we are in need of temporary shelters to keep them warm, dry and safe at night.
