Story

While South Africa has one of the most progressive constitutions in the world, unfortunately, there are still massive inequalities there. Affordable legal advice and assistance is out of reach for many, many people. Communities and individuals in Cape Town face difficult living circumstances, often without sufficient legal knowledge and representation. Human rights abuses continue to be a problem, especially in disadvantaged areas in the city.

In response to this need, QUB Law Society has teamed up with Projects Abroad to send 15 students to Cape Town next summer in order to provide free legal aid to those who would not otherwise be able to access such support. I am incredibly fortunate to have been selected as one of those 15 students. While this opportunity will allow me to gain first-hand experience of human rights law in practice, knowledge of the South African legal system and a chance to become part of their community, I will also be assisting with case preparation and providing invaluable legal support for those who need it most. I will have an important role in empowering local communities by educating them about their human rights whilst also providing support to vulnerable women and providing workshops for young offenders.

Of course, there is no funding available for this sort of work and so, in order for us to be able to go and support the team in South Africa we have a lot of fundraising to do! I would be incredibly grateful for any support at all towards this great cause. Any contribution would be very much appreciated!
