Story

We are finding that the cost of mums recovery is ever growing. Not only does she now have to follow a special dairy free diet, as covid has left her with a dairy allergy, but getting around is also a problem. to try and drive again giving her back independence we have had to get a motorbility car, this comes with an expensive down payment then costs her the mobility element of Personal independence payment. On top of this we now realise that mum needs a more expensive lightweight mobility scooter because she only has one working arm, thats not covered by any grant or motorbility as we are getting a car. Mum is grateful for all of the help she has received so far but living solely on benefits is a lot harder than you would think. added in with the costs of recovery and having teenagers both in full time education we find ourselves struggling to cope.

my mums POV~

I'm Bex, a 40 year old wife and mother from Kent. My husband is called Martin (my hero) and I have two teenagers a girl, Izabelle Jaime who's 19, and a boy, William who's 17. We have an 11 year old dog called Bellatrix. I'm a retired hairdresser. I have hyper mobility syndrome and fibromyalgia, hence the retired in retired hairdresser.

I lost the use of my right arm, and I'm constantly in pain despite of strong pain killers. I have a damaged diaphragm and scarring on my lungs, so going out without a wheelchair is impossible. I had incontinance issues after so long with a catheter! I suffered panic attacks daily. I have anxiety and experienced hallucinations. I was on 24 hour oxygen and have been diagnosed with sleep apnea so now I have a BIPAP machine at night (I hate it). I couldn’t even bear a duvet on me or lay down and ‘slept’ on the sofa for the first couple of months. I experienced hair loss and a 2 stone weight loss. This after an induced coma, I was put in prone and was unable to see my family in person until I went home as no visitors due to COVID regulations. I relapsed at home, collapsing with a secondary infection leading to type 2 respiratory failure and another stint in ICU. Martin had to resuscitate me in front of the kids leaving them needing trauma counselling. This isn’t even everything, the whole family had Covid over Christmas and Martin narrowly avoided hospital himself. We were shielding too because William has asthma!

This all started because we needed bloody fabric softener! We had done the online Christmas shopping and the normal weekly shop. We were shielding because everyone in the house is asthmatic, apart from me. William really badly.

So we popped to Tesco, masked up. Hand gel galore. Washed our hands when we got back.

I’ll never look at fabric softener the same again.
