Story
You may remember the devastating earthquake in southern Turkey & Syria that took the lives of thousands of people on 6th February 2023. What you may not know is that of those killed, 24 school children, 10 parents, 4 teachers and a trainer had travelled from my hometown Gazi Magusa (Famagusta) in Northern Cyprus to compete in a school volleyball tournament (in which they were Northern Cyprus Volleyball Champions).
The 24 children (aged 11-14) and their guardians were all killed when their hotel in the south eastern city of Adiyaman collapsed burying them under mounds of rubble.
These children were from my hometown of Gazi Magusa (Famagusta) a small close knit town where I was brought up and raised. I still consider this ‘my town’ and both myself and my family still feel the outpouring of grief from the whole community who are still mourning.
I am personally invested in commemorating these kids (known now as the Champion Angels) and I am hoping to raise enough money to subsidise a memorial or indeed a school sports hall dedicated in their name; whatever their grieving parents would suggest is befitting to honour them.
One of the ways I intend to do this is by running in the Nicosia Half Marathon in their memory, which takes place on 22nd October 2023, and I would really appreciate it if you were able to sponsor me by donating to this cause which is close to my heart. Any amount no matter how small would be gratefully received and will help me in achieving this goal, and I’ll even try and finish in the top twenty (vets league of course 😊)
If nothing else, thank you for taking the time to read this and your consideration in donating.
