    What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

We are a group of young people from the UK who are currently on a volunteer placement with ICS in Mzimba, Malawi. Over the last few months we've made connection with a local community-based organisation called Kurya ndiko uku, which is an orphanage, school and women's shelter.

This organisation provides incredible help to the impoverished people in the area, acting as a safe space for women and their young children escaping horrific situations, and working to provide them with skills, education and confidence to get back in their feet and take control of their lives, to earn their own income and thrive.

Furthermore, this facility invites young people in the area to be trained in vocational skills free of charge. There is a massive problem of early school drop-outs in Mzimba, resulting in child marriage, anti-social behaviours and contributing to the cycle of poverty. The youth here have little career or further education options and face a constant struggle against cultural expectations, peer pressure and the lack of teaching facilities and resources. Kurya ndiko uku provides these youths with an opportunity, something that is so rare in the developing world.

Unfortunately, this organisation is not within the jurisdiction of our project here in Mzimba, but us as people, have felt so affected by this brilliant community and the crazy, beautiful, welcoming way they have made our home here, we wanted to give something back.

The orphanage is in desperate need for a well to be built, to provide water for the growing number of people relying on its care. This will cost 50'000kw, approximately £50. Any donations would be hugely appreciated, and if you're looking for more information about Kuyra ndiko uku, ICS or us and our work out here, please feel free to ask any questions!
