Story

Korogocho is a slum in Nairobi, home to around 200,000 people crowded into 1.5 square km. The slum borders Dandora landfill site where the majority of Nairobi's rubbish is taken and burnt, spreading toxic smoke. Many of the people living in Korogocho are young children, faced with the daily reality of poverty, hunger, drug abuse and violence.

The women on the left in the picture above are between 14 and 18 - they already have at least one child of their own, and are forced to work as prostitutes on the streets of the slum at night to try and earn enough money to provide for themselves and their babies.

Despite these incredibly harsh conditions, my overwhelming impression of visiting Korogocho was that it is filled with some of the most welcoming, generous, resilient people I have ever met. Children ran up to say hello, ask me my name, welcome me, all with the biggest smiles. The two amazing people I spent the day working alongside, Catherine and Victor, treated me like their family and really took the time to involve me in and explain to me their work.

They work for a project which empowers street children, run by Kenya Good Neighbours, with the help of a Mobile School. They wheel this mobile cart through the streets of the slum, unfold the panels to reveal lots of different educational tools and games, and wait for the children to come! They create a safe space where children and young people are unconditionally accepted and respected, where they can come to discover, learn and really just be children.

Catherine also runs Touch-Life children's centre which offers counselling services, basic education, food and refuge for street children. To date it helps 65 children aged between 3 and 10 (pictured below with their most recent food donation).

My experience of Korogocho really touched and inspired me, and I saw first hand how much difference Catherine and Victor's work is making to hundreds of children's lives. Through the mobile school, they act as the bridge between educating these children on the streets and helping them back into school or vocational training courses. While they used to receive funding to help with the costs of sending these children to school and providing training for them, this has now stopped.

Catherine told me that to send a child to the nearby Korogocho Glory School costs the equivalent of just £15 per child per term (this includes their food during the school day). Aside from giving them the best chance possible to receive an education that will hopefully lead to a life outside of the slum, the faces below show just how happy these children are to be in school...

Please help me to raise money for these two incredible causes: the mobile school streetwork with Kenya Good Neighbours and the Touch-Life children's centre. All contributions received really will help to make a direct and life-changing impact on these young children's lives.

Thanks so much for your help - asante sana!
