Story
For anyone that has visited Beqa and our FJM project, you will understand how essential our relationship with our local village Naiseuseu is to the functioning of our project and overall staff and volunteer happiness. The village supports us all on a daily basis through letting us buy supplies from families when we run out of the essentials such as sugar and eggs, taking us along to their beautiful and moving church ceremonies on Sundays and inviting us down for sports days and to play games.
Naiseuseu is a small Fijian village, located in Vaga Bay, around a 5-minute walk from our base camp. It is home to around 200 people, including Mac and Sowanna and their 7 beautiful children, who play the role of adopted family to everyone here at FJM; welcoming us into their home every Thursday for dinner, Kava and lessons in Fijian customs. Sowanna also serves as an agony aunt for anyone on camp requiring cuddles, tea and cake and her infinite words of wisdom. Mac works tirelessly around the clock as our local boat captain, navigating the reefs that he has grown up on to take us to beautiful undiscovered sites and introduce us to the wonders of Beqa’s reefs. He also always takes us safely back and forth from the mainland over some pretty stormy seas, ensuring volunteers always make their flights and that we can always do re-supply, whatever the weather!
Naiseuseu consists of mostly traditional farmers and fishers, striving to provide for their families and raise children with aspirations of universities and high-flying careers far away from their humble roots on Beqa. Sadly, in February 2018, Beqa was hit by cyclone Gita; although not causing catastrophic damage, Naiseuseu’s generator was broken and has rendered the village without power for the past 4 months, and this is something that without help, the village cannot afford to fix themselves. As we are approaching winter in the southern hemisphere (yes, even Fiji has winter!), with colder and darker nights on the way, life without power is becoming increasingly difficult for the people of Naiseuseu.
This is where we come in, FJM are hosting a ‘Soli’ (a Fijian fundraising event) in June in order to raise the funds to fix the generator in time for winter; and we need your help! Soli consists of a day of good food and Kava provided by us, guests eat, drink, dance and tell stories all day and donate what they can to the cause. Anyone that has been to, or knows anyone that has been to Beqa will understand how amazing the people of Naiseuseu are, and how this project would not run without them.
So, we are hypothetically inviting all old volunteers, friends and family of volunteers or just kind-hearted members of the public to our Soli, to donate anything you can to give the village light throughout the winter.
We are truly blessed that Naiseuseu have welcomed us into their homes and hearts and have loved every one of our volunteers over our 5 years here as if we were family. Many of us have shared some of our best memories with this village and some of our hardest goodbyes, and this is our chance to give back and let them know that just because we will all eventually move on from Beqa, we will never forget the kindness that they showed us and the memories we share with them. So please, whatever you can give will not go un-noticed and they will be eternally grateful, please help us give back to the people that have supported FJM since day one.
