    Story

In loving memory of our dear friend and fellow St John, Colonel Jane Hunter (née Jane Brothwell), who sadly passed away in 2021, we will be launching ‘Janey’ at a boat naming ceremony at the University of St Johns Rowing club next year.

Jane was a much-loved student at St Johns from 1987 to 1991 and her passion for rowing started as soon as she signed up in freshers week. She was elected ladies Captain from 1988-89 and President from 1989-90 and went on to row in many head of the river races and club regattas during her time at university. Every weekend she would always ride her bike down to the boat house and head out on the river with her rowing friends. Jane, Janey, or ‘Brotty’ as she was often affectionately known was an inspiration to us all. She lived for each and every moment. She was kind, loving, loyal and so very funny - there was never a dull conversation with Jane!

Her friends would like to create a lasting legacy for Jane by naming a boat in her honour and by raising funds to support St Johns boat club so that future students can enjoy the same opportunities as Jane did.

All fellow friends and alumni who remember Jane are invited to attend the naming ceremony on Saturday 20th January 2024 at St Johns boat house, York - please get in touch with Sarah or Sam via email if you would like to come along. sam.sammantra@gmail.com or sarah.boani@btinternet.com - in the meantime, we would appreciate any kind donations. We are delighted that £425 has been raised so far to support the boat club's current students. Jane was a popular member of the Rowing Club as well as Club President at St Johns' (1987-1991), and those that remember her will know how well she was liked with her cheeky smile and friendly nature. What a wonderful legacy for the club she will leave when boat Janey will be seen rowing up and down the river! Here's a photo memory of the Club in 1989 - Jane front row third on the right. There's still time to donate before the boat launch next week!
