Story

WHAT IS THE AIM OF THE PROJECT?

All the Q'eqchi' Mayans we work with live in extreme poverty, in a basic shelter with no electricity, and no clean drinking water.

While severely undernourished children are helped to recuperate, it is vital that their families receive training to prevent more young lives being put at risk.

HOW DO WE ACHIEVE IT?

With a homestead where parents, pregnant women and teenagers are learning to grow vegetables and rear hens for eggs. Parasites are a big factor in malnutrition, so there is also a model house to show how the home and drinking water can be made safe. And while the families are learning new skills, the children´s health and weights are being improved and monitored.

During their training, they will receive seeds, plants and eggs to take home. They also benefit from education in child care, including how to make nutritious meals from the food they produce. And with up to 14 children born in one family, they have access to life-changing and free family-planning services.

WHO ARE WE HELPING?

- Families with one or more child suffering from severe malnutrition in 25 communities.

- Pregnant women with no access to pre-natal vitamins and education.

- Middle-school children of 13-16 years in four communities (this area has the highest rate of teenage pregnancies in the entire region)

Thank you, on the families´ behalf, for your support!
