Story
On April 25 2015, an earthquake 7.8 on the richter scale struck Nepal 50 miles northwest of the capital city Kathmandu. On May 12 2015, an aftershock 7.3 on the richter scale followed.
In just under three weeks an estimated 8 million people had been affected. 3.9 million were in need of urgent assistance or humanitarian aid. 22,000 were injured. 9,000 were dead.
In the immediate aftermath, organisations responded to the disaster with search and rescue teams and immediate aid. However, over the past three years recovery effort has been slow. Repairs to the damage and destruction made to schools, health centres, roads and homes are still underway. Around 24,000 classrooms were damaged or destroyed and although some have been repaired, thousands of students are still in temporary learning centres.
Next October, I am travelling with a group of students from my sixth form college to Kathmandu, Nepal to build a classroom and help more children gain access to education. In order to fund this facility we need to raise a total of £13,000. I have set up this fundraising page in the hope of reaching my individual target of £800. Any donations large or small would be so gratefully received.
