    Story

Swim for Sam. Swimming the Catalina Channel and raising funds for the Gib Sams. On the evening of 10th August 2017 I shall be jumping into the waters around the Island of Santa Catalina and swimming to Long Beach Los Angeles, a distance 32km (20miles). The swim is a planned night and I should arrive in Los Angeles during the morning of the 11th August.

    The charity:

“There are a lot of instances where people are feeling in need of emotional support and they need somebody to talk to. Maybe they are really worried about something and they don’t want to talk to their families as they are ashamed”

“The idea of the Samaritans is to have somebody on the other side of the phone. It’s anonymous, you don’t have to say who you are and you don’t know who you are talking to. That person will listen, they are not going to judge you or tell you what to do, and they will help you work out your own problems.”

“You don’t have to be alone. You don’t have to deal with a crisis on your own.”

Swim completed on the 11th August. Jumped in at approximately 11pm on the 10th of August and swam through the night. Swam in the dark for 6.5hrs and eventually landed on the Californian coast 9 and a half hours after the start. Swimmimg in the dark with large swells was both frightening and scary. I felt sick for most of the swim from the swells at the start and the 2.5hr boat ride to the Island where the starting point was. It is very satisfying to have completed this the most mentally tough of all my swims to date.
