We are a team of 22 young people and four staff members taking part in the National Citizen Service programme this summer. As part of our summer journey, we spend two weeks working on a Social Action Project to better our local community. We chose to spend our time working on raising awareness for mental health charities that operate in the local area, as well as attempting to break some of the stigma attached to mental health issues.
To do this, we are running a music, food, and fun event on Wednesday 1st August 12pm-5pm at Norton Knatchbull school, in order to spread the word and raise as much as we can for our chosen charities:
Project Walk to Talk: Project Walk to Talk was started after a local Ashford boy, Sam West, committed suicide in early 2018. Ben West, brother of Sam wants to make sure that no family goes through the same pain that his did. PROJECT #WalkToTalk is designed to get people walking and also promote the idea that it is ok to not be ok. Why walking? Simply going outside for half an hour a day is proven to enhance mental wellbeing as well as improving overall fitness and physical health. The Walk to Talk team are aiming to raise funds to put towards proper treatment and diagnosis for young people with mental illnesses as well as support for family and friends.
MIND: MIND provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. We campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding. We won't give up until everyone experiencing a mental health problem gets support and respect.
Any donations to our team would be hugely appreciated, and will be going towards helping us help two fantastic charities.
