Weʼve raised £2,305 to support Nenna and her family with additional costs whilst she's in hospital.

    Story

Nenna has been in hospital for a little over two weeks, the longest admission we’ve coped with yet. She is in and out of ICU with non-invasive breathing support. Nenna’s learning disability and lack of verbal communication mean she needs someone with her who knows her well pretty much all the time. We are crowdfunding to help pay for additional overnight carer-hours whilst she's in hospital (and for subsistence at the hospital canteen for her parents when we don't have the spoons to take in sandwiches).

A little more about Nenna: she has a very rare mutation of the gene CTBP1--only a couple of dozen cases are known worldwide. Sufferers have muscle weakness and are prone to (among other things) respiratory illness, which makes them life-limited. These past weeks have been full of difficult choices, but as you can see, Nenna is still finding things to smile about.

NB: A. L. Lester is my pen name, and most people know me as Ally, so that's what I've gone with on here. We are up to our eyeballs with sick child and hospital communications, so if you have a time-sensitive question, please contact our dear family friend Jeannelle D'Isa at russetblack@gmail.com, who will respond on Eastern Standard time US.

Nenna loves good wishes. She doesn't read, but she does like pictures of baby animals. Send those to ally@allester.co.uk and we will share them with her!

Folks! Thanks so much for all your support! Nenna came home at the weekend! We have a ventilator (with a BIPAP mask) for her to use at night, which should allow her to live a normal life during the day without getting overly tired. Community Nurses are looking for more funding for overnight to wrangle the vent, which is tricksy and currently needs adjusting every couple of hours. She's very good with it, it's just that the mask is a bit big. We're waiting for a smaller one. We are so, so grateful for all your help and good wishes.

I couldn't get this to attach to the first post! This is the BIPAP mask she is wearing at night. She tolerates it really well, despite having to have a big sticking plaster on her nose to prevent it rubbing 💜

Thank you all so much for the help you've given us. Nenna is SO much better. She is almost completely off the daytime ventilation and is successfully tolerating the nightime mask (in pic). It seems the nighttime BIPAP is giving her more energy during the day, with a brief period back on it midday for a rest. If all goes to plan, she will be discharged on Wednesday to the hospice and we'll have a couple of days there resting and getting to grips with the ventilator before we all come home on Friday. We are all looking forward to some normal.
