Story

For the past four years I have been delighted to take part in events run by my friend Paula Lamb who set up and has been running the Braveheart charity in memory of her dad who died at a too young age as a result of Alzheimer's disease.

Last year I took part in my first ever triathlon despite being pants at running; despite being far nearer 60 than 50 and most certainly despite any sort of common sense.

This year's challenge is equally batty - I am going to climb Ben Nevis. Now what's such a challenge about that, I hear you say. After all, I have no doubt that when I get up there I will have been overtaken by kids, little old ladies and an assortment of dugs, some of whom may not have all their limbs intact.

The battiness comes in the form of me not being a regular hillwalker on account of having absolutely no head for heights. No, really; I can't even stand on a chair to get something off a shelf. Additionally, I will be accompanied by my sister who is definitely wobbly of knee.

So, two wee middle-aged wimmin are going to give this a go and it is set for July 25th or 26th depending on which is less "inclement". If weather conditions mean I don't get the chance to carry out the ascent of this not inconsiderable mountain, I will do the equivalent as a stair climb at the gym. Of the two, the actual mountain is FAR less daunting.

It would mean a lot to me if you were able to contribute a little towards the very worthwhile Braveheart charity. Alzheimer's is a terrible disease that robs people of a large part of their memories. I, like Paula, have seen family members, friends and neighbours succumb to it and I would like to think that by challenging myself to do this climb, I will be playing my part in trying to find a solution to a dreadful disease. Any little help is very welcome and I thank you in advance.

And PLEASE don't laugh at our very wacky trousers on the day.
