Story
Newport Transporter Bridge in the most significant structure on Newport's skyline. It can be seen for miles around and locals say it is the sight of the Bridge that confirms their homecoming after travelling away.
Opened in 1906 when few buildings were over four stories and houses generally lit by gas and heated with coal, the bridge standing 70 metres and powered by electricity must have seemed like the very embodiment of the future.
The Transporter is both a bridge and machine and consequently needs constant maintenance and repair.
We have been granted a stage 1 Heritage lottery pass for a project that will ensure the Bridge is passed to the next generation in as good a condition as possible. However to pass stage 2, the project needs to have certainty over its matched funding and this appeal is part of our fundraising strategy.
Pont Gludo Casnewydd yw strwythur amlycaf nenlinell Casnewydd. Mae i’w gweld o filltiroedd i ffwrdd ac, yn ôl y trigolion lleol, yr olygfa o’r Bont sy’n cadarnhau eu bod gartref ar ôl iddynt fod bant yn teithio.
Pan gafodd ei hagor ym 1906, pan nad oedd llawer o adeiladau’n fwy na 4 llawr a phan fyddai tai wedi cael eu goleuo gan nwy a’u gwresogi gan lo, mae’n siŵr y byddai’r bont 70 metr, wedi’i phweru gan drydan, wedi edrych fel strwythur o’r dyfodol.
Mae’r Bont Gludo’n bont ac yn beiriant, ac felly mae angen ei chynnal a’i thrwsio’n rheolaidd. Rydym wedi cael pàs cam 1 gan Gronfa Dreftadaeth y Loteri ar gyfer prosiect a fydd yn sicrhau bod y Bont yn cael ei phasio i’r genhedlaeth nesaf mewn cyflwr cystal â phosib. Fodd bynnag, i gyrraedd cam 2, rhaid i’r prosiect roi sicrwydd o ran arian cyfatebol, ac mae’r apêl hon yn rhan o’n strategaeth i godi arian.
