Story

Project charity

One of the most devastating impacts of the HIV epidemic in Africa is the loss of whole generations of people in communities hardest hit by the epidemic. In this regard, it is often children who feel the greatest impact, with the loss of parents or older relatives. There are 3.7 million orphaned children in South Africa, with more than half (2 million) orphaned by AIDS-related illnesses. The highest rate of new infection is among adolescents with a ratio of two girls to each boy being infected.

I'm going to be leading and participating in a project in South Africa, working with grade 11 South African students in Mnamatha Primary School, KwaNuswa Valley in the rural township of ‘The Valley of a thousand Hills’.

The project is run by The Hillcrest Aids Charity Trust, and supports aids orphans in South Africa.

I'll be there from the 8th to 22nd July. We will clean, prepare and paint 8 classrooms and teach grade 6 and 7 learners at the school. We need to raise money to contribute towards the costs of travel and materials used in the preparation, painting and teaching.

The group will be accompanied by two teachers, and Dr Margaret Turnbull an exHigh School Principal and consultant from England and founder of the charity in England.
