Story
St Theresa’s Children need a Place to Play and Learn and Grow Together.
Who are we? St Theresa’s is a Catholic Primary School in Chester in an area which is identified as being ‘Socially Disadvantaged’. Many of the children come from homes which are overcrowded and finances at home are very limited for many families. Despite this, the local Blacon community and school focus is vibrant, happy and purposeful. The school is involved in all the local community events and also has strong links with the local Parish community.
A long tradition: St. Theresa’s School is a family school – many grandparents attended the school as pupils as did a large number of parents and carers. Adults choose the school for their children because of the caring atmosphere and success that pupils have in their learning.
Disappointment: The school recently had some news which shocked all the children, staff and families. The outdoor equipment which the school has spent many years investing in was checked and found to be in need of significant repair or replacement. The cost of the basic needs just to make the equipment safe again was over £10,000.
Incredible support and generosity: The school has already had some wonderful support from the families of the children in school who have given their time, skills and imagination to help improve the situation. Some of the equipment has been removed, and funds have been raised to help repair and replace the resources that are so well used and loved by all the children in the school. The equipment is used not only for creative, imaginative and physical play but also to support important learning in lessons across the curriculum.
Still such a long way to go… Despite everyone’s efforts and many hours of hard work, the funds raised to cover the costs of repairs and replacement of the equipment have only amounted to a small fraction of what will be required to improve the situation for the school.
