Story

When Jordan and I went for our 12 week scan, we were told the news no parent ever wants to hear, “Your baby is not compatible with life.” Our hearts broke into pieces. We were told that our son has a rare birth defect called Anencephaly. This makes chances of survival after birth very unlikely. This defect affects 1 in every 1000 pregnancies yet it is a condition not many people actually know about! Anencephaly is the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull and scalp. The cause of this defect is sadly unknown and happens 23-26 days after conception. Breaks my heart to say, but there is no cure or treatment. When Jordan and I were told this devastating news, we were also given the option to terminate the pregnancy. We knew straight away that we wanted to continue with the pregnancy, we felt it was the right thing to do for us as a family. Continuing with the pregnancy has meant that we got to find out that we are having a beautiful baby boy, got to experience feeling him kick and summersault and believe me, he makes his presence well known! Each small thing to everyone else is a huge milestone for us! We have watched him grow from a tiny wee egg, to a big boy who is always camera shy. It’s been a long journey, instead of shopping and planning the start of our sons life, we have to plan for the end of such a short life for him. Instead of looking round the maternity unit and labour ward, we’ve had to look around a children’s hospice that will help us look after and give our newborn son, end of life care. As this is such a difficult time already, its breaking my heart to speak about the next step, planning JJ’s funeral. We are very lucky that the co-op is funding the funeral. As for the site we have picked for him and the headstone, they are not included. We would like to ask that no gifts be bought for JJ. If you could manage to make a small donation instead, it would be much appreciated. All the support has been amazing and we would just like to thank you for being part of this journey.
