Story

3 years ago I got diognosed with EDS type 3, a connective tissue disorder which causes me to dislocate on a daily basis and live in pain. Along with this diognosis I have developed other symptoms related to the condition such as POTs which cause me to feel faint when standing for long and many other symptoms. Due to this i now spend all my time when on my feet in specially made moulded plastic splints to stop my ankles from dislocating and causing more damage. More and more I am needing an electric wheelchair to get me around and allow me to have breaks from my splints to reduce the severity of pressure sores.

For 12 years I have been a skier, exploring the mountains, wanting to become a fully qualified ski instructor and helping those who were disabled to ski with adaptive equipment, little did I know later in my life I would be skiing in the equipment I have taught people to use! I trained to be a disabled ski guide at my local disabled ski club at the age of 15 where I taught many children and adults with a variety of disabilities to ski for 7 years. Sadly due to my own disabilities 2 years ago I have had to let my qualification lapse but I try and support other guides and instructors who are still actively teaching.

18 months ago I attended another local disabled ski club as I have always said the last thing I would give up is skiing, even if I was on my death bed. I knew there was equipment which could meet my needs and thought that this was my last hope to get back on the slopes. Within 6 hours over 3 months I was coming down the slope on my own, but sadly I had got ‘too good’ for the equipment as it was very basic. Next step was to move from the basic sit ski to a mono ski which they use in the para-olympics. This proved much fun and a great peice of kit to push my bounderies but when I fell and badly dislocated my shoulder I knew this was not a safe option long term. I needed something with the same technical challange but with more balance.

My friend then suggested for me to try a Tessier Tempo Dual Ski..... and well lets say I have fallen in love! This piece of kit has allowed me to be more technically challanged but also gives me more balance and grip in icy conditions. With more instruction on snow and more practice it means I can once again be independant, which I am desperate to do.

Sadly the Dual Ski I am currently borrowing on a monthly basis is part of another clubs kit and not avaliable for times when a particular instructor is not there. It also means I cannot take it on holiday and spend time with it with my family on our annual winter and summer ski holiday and use it at other slopes. I also cannot adapt the kit to meat my needs, for example the seating to me is like a pair of shoes, I need to make it comfortable and ensure my hips do not dislocate when I am skiing, sadly due to it not being mine I cannot adapt it in any way. This is why i am looking to raise £5000 to get my own adapted kit. This will cover the cost for the whole sit ski and needed accessiories to get me around the slopes and also some specialist ski lessons with instructors on snow to get the most out of the equipment to improve my skills.

So please help me to get my own kit and get me back on the slopes, to pass on my knowledge of being in a skit ski to others and explore the moutians which I love to do.

Thank you so much

Nicole

So a few days into skiing at Landgraaf in the Netherlands, and I have been signed off to ski with my family with a dual tempo, using chair lifts! Big thanks to Shos.nl for a few lessons and the loan of the tempo and an even bigger thanks for my family and friends helping me! I absolutely love this piece of kit which has enabled me to ski for ages and with the rest of my family! Just need to raise the money now to get my own before heading out on the mountains.
