In March 2017 I'll embark on the adventure of a lifetime! I will be flying over to Dumaguete, Philippines where I will volunteer for 4 weeks in the maternity services in Negros Oriental Provincial Hospital and also in the community.

I am in my final year of Midwifery at Edinburgh Napier University; as part of my course I have chosen to visit Dumaguete as their healthcare is completely different from the maternity care her in the UK; with one significant difference being the number of maternal deaths due to pregnancy and childbirth.

I have gained invaluable skills whilst on placements in both community and hospital settings.  I have developed the experience and skills to care for women during pregnancy, in labour and postnatally; I look forward to using and developing these skills in Dumaguete and understanding how other healthcare systems work.

I look forward to visiting schools and orphanages whilst in the Philippines and taking over toys and clothes for the children. I love travelling, but I have been fairly limited whilst studying for my degree and so the opportunity to incorporate this with my studies alongside my passion for caring for women, babies and their families will be incredible.  It will be a unique experience which will give me a greater understanding about healthcare outside of the NHS and also experience the culture of this country will be a trip I will never forget.

I will be travelling with my two classmates and friends; this trip is self-funded and by going through Work the World they organise our accommodation and placements which amount to £1,390.
