Story

My name is Niel and live in Edinburgh, Scotland where I was born and raised. I have worked extensively in both Edinburgh and London. I have also travelled extensively over the world meeting people from many cultures and backgrounds.

After a long and very tiring career both in business, and then latterly (15years), as a Mental Health Nurse with the NHS, my experience and observations led me to writing a trilogy of poetry. Specifically, I want to shine a light and highlight the many difficulties and dilemmas that all of us face today in the modern, rat race, consumer driven society. Thus I have written 3 books consisting of 14 poems per book.

With countless self-help books available on the shelves, I personally wonder if many of them ever really get to the heart of the matter and really spell out many of our problems. I figured that writing easy to understand poetry from a different angle may be an opportunity to attract new readers and act as an alternative, to what is available for the never ending problems and issues that seem to engulf us personally and within our complex society.

The poems are hard hitting and satirical and, act as a voice of what people really think but are too scared to really say. The objective of these poems is to promote discussion and debate and also, to act as reassurance and help others overcome isolation and loneliness in their thinking, especially in these accelerated times where the world seems like it has gone crazy. And where people think that it's just themselves going crazy.

These writings cover a variety of everyday life topics such as, work and employment, the economy and corporate monsters, shit food and diet, mental health and medicine, politics and government, technology, the media, education, celebrity culture, poverty and the housing crisis, and the environmental mess that we all now face.

My objective here is to raise money in order to allow me to self-publish and print initially 1500 copies in order to promote my work through talks and readings throughout the UK and to provide the necessary marketing materials, travel costs and audio equipment for recording audiobook, and presenting the work in spoken word format as well as in print. It will also pay for illustration and graphics in the books. I am keen to avoid the route of traditional publishing as it contradicts and refutes the very message that, I am trying to convey through my poetry books.

We all are living in times of great uncertainty and social turbulence, and I can further attest this from my work over many years as a psychiatric nurse, whereby too many people are succumbing to depression, anxiety, worry, stress, and profound mental health issues, and addicted and dependent on pharmaceutical drugs, when in fact, this should really be, the opposite in the twenty first century!

Your kind support and donations would be most appreciated and any gesture would be beneficial to fulfil my intention of raising awareness and giving hope to others, and that they can feel that they are not alone in this ever changing crazy mad world!

Many thanks
