Story

Hi everyone.
I'm currently half way through studying my adults nursing degree. Part of this three year course gives me an opportunity to travel abroad and work in a developing country for 4 weeks as a student nurse.

I have chosen Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka like many developing countries has several challenges relating to poverty, quality education, healthcare delivery and proper legislation to support disabled and needy people.

Working as a Student Nurse in Sri Lanka is an eye-opening experience. As a Student Nurse I will gain a great deal of valuable work-experience in a variety of departments. This placement in a developing country will challenge the perspectives i have built up working and studying in a western world culture.

Comparing this to the current healthcare we have in the UK is going to be a real eye-opener. I feel this is going to give me an ideal opportunity to develop myself professionally and personally and I hope to bring back a whole new insight to medicine that only a small number of people get to experience. I will have to overcome the language barrier and expand on my 'thinking outside the box', and non verbal skills whilst building on my inter-personal development.

I will also undertake a weeks experience in the Ayurveda clinic working alongside the village doctor combining traditional medicines such as tree bark and plants, with modern day medicines. A technique that is quite new to me.

As a student nurse I feel privilaged and excited at being given this opportunity, and would like to express my thanks and gratefulness for any donations towards this trip.

Whilst I am in Sri Lanka I also want to write a blog of my time and experiences so people can enjoy the journey with me.
