£6,880raised of £10,000 target by 194 supporters

Weʼre raising £10,000 to provide ongoing care needs for Richard, who was left with a Hypoxic Brain Injury as a result of a cardiac arrest whilst out running

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding is a new type of fundraising where you can raise funds for your own personal cause, even if you're not a registered charity.

The page owner is responsible for the distribution of funds raised.

Richard's story

In March 2017, my partner Richard Bairstow, was out running training for the Leeds Half Marathon. Sadly, whilst out running Richard suffered a sudden cardiac arrest. Richard was 26 at the time, young and healthy. We still don’t know why this happened but suspect a genetic or hereditary heart condition and there have been various and on-going investigations into him and his family.

Thankfully, this was witnessed by two other runners who were able to go to Richard’s aid and call an ambulance. Unfortunately, Richard has been left with a Hypoxic Brain Injury as his brain was starved of oxygen as a result of the cardiac arrest.

Richard has suffered an incredible amount since this day and there has been numerous touch and go moments. However, he continues to surprise us and in recent months we have seen improvements in him that have exceeded all the medical staff’s and our expectations. It has undoubtedly been the worst year of Richard and our lives and the trauma has sent shockwaves through everyone who knows him and us.

Richard is currently in neurological rehabilitation where he has sessions such as physio and speech and language therapy daily. We still do not know what the future will look like for Richard or how far he will improve. We are, however, determined to continue supporting him and do everything in our power to ensure that he will lead the best possible life we can get for him. Richard deserves to be treated with dignity and compassion.

We are therefore starting a crowdfunding campaign to help us raise contributions for his on-going and continuous care needs, rehabilitation aids and adaptations that he will require in the future.

It's difficult to know how much money we will need for Richard's healthcare at this point. Things will hopefully become clearer in the coming months. Any money that isn't spent on him, however, will be donated to the charities and hospitals that have been instrumental in helping Richard and those close to him during this difficult period. This will help to ensure that future users of those services receive the same care that Richard did. These include: Headway, the Neurological Rehabilitation Service at Leeds General Infirmary, and the Neurological department at Chapel Allerton Hospital. We will make sure money donated to charity also gets given with Gift Aid.

We are so grateful for anything that people can do to raise money, or donate money, for his cause. Thank you.
