    Story

A chairde, cuirimis in iúl don tsaol mhór gur le gach páiste, gach bean, agus gach fear an Ghaeilge, agus nach gá go mbeadh uirthi dul fríd aon 'tástáil oiriúnachta' le go mbeadh beannacht shimplí ar nós 'Nollaig Shona' le feiceáil ar foluain go breá bródúil i lár an tSratha Báin. Taispeánaimis do pháistí na Gaelscoile, agus dá dteaghlaigh ar fad, go bhfuil fáilte rompu, gan cheist, gan teist, ina mbaile dúchais féin, agus iad ag labhairt a dteanga dhúchais féin. Iontach buíoch as aon deonúchán a thig libh a thabhairt, beag, measartha nó mór. Rachaidh gach pingin i dtreo an Ghaeilge a dhéanamh níos feiceálaí le linn na Nollag, ar an tSrath Bán, ag toiseacht le soilse galánta agus 'Nollaig Shona' scríofa orthu.

Dear friends, a number of representatives on our local authority have voted that simple Irish language lights expressing a Christmas Greeting 'Nollaig Shona' must undergo some 'equality impact assessment' before they can be considered appropriate for public display. This is an insult to every child in our town who attends the local Gaelscoil, and to all those families struggling to breathe life into the Irish language every day of our lives. We do not need the approval of anyone to speak our language nor see it side by side with English, which we also respect. This decision is a bigger threat to equality than the actual language itself. It has in some way cast a 'controversial' or 'suspicious' cloud over the Irish language. Every penny will go towards purchasing lights and decorations that will bring the Irish language to life in the middle of our town at Christmas, and we will show our young Irish-speaking children that we welcome and embrace them equally with all others.

      Update from the Page owner

A chairde, anocht an oíche, agus ba mhaith liom mo mhórbhuíochas, ó mo chroí istigh, ó bhonn mo bhróg go baithis mo chinn, a ghabháil libh as an tacaíocht iontach a thug sibh don togra seo. Dear friends, tonight is the night when your light goes up into the night sky, and the indigenous language of Ireland, and the language of our local Gaelscoil pupils, and the many many hundreds of learners, and speakers of the language, in our town will shine brightly in a simple Christmas Greeting 'Nollaig Shona Duit'. GO RAIBH CÉAD MAITH AGAIBH UILIG!

Tá muid fágtha gan focal, an chaint bainte dínn, ag an fhlaithiúlacht atá léirithe do shoilse nollag i nGaeilge don tSrath Bán. Tá orm praghasanna a fháil gan mhoill. Tá an sprioc £600 bainte amach agaibh cheana féin. Cibé méid a thiocfaidh isteach rachaidh sé ar shoilse agus ar mhaisiúcháin agus ar leictreachas. We are totally overwhelmed with support. Gaelscoil fully behind this effort. I will get quotes very soon. Every penny will be a penny brighter, be that in size or number of lights, or electric. yous are the real egalitarians!!!
