Story

"Music of various sorts has been part of Dad’s life."

From the moment he joined the choir at St. Andrew’s Church at age 9, music became a constant in Dad's life.

There was a brief flirtation with beer in his teenage years, but music reclaimed its rightful place – and never left.

Growing up, I remember Dream of Olwen by Mantovani playing constantly – often to Mum’s mild annoyance! Mum & Dad loved following the Derby Opera Company’s musicals, and Dad tried his hand at barbershop singing.

Steven and I attempted piano and accordion lessons with him, but sadly didn’t inherit his musical gifts. Joanne did – achieving Grade 5 in piano & clarinet. In recent years, Dad even had keyboard lessons with his youngest granddaughter, Emily – moments they both cherished.

But the most meaningful musical chapter in Dad’s life came when he joined The Dalesmen Male Voice Choir 8 years ago. They weren’t just a choir – they became his friends, his community & his extended family.

A highlight came last year when The Dalesmen hosted the world-renowned Morriston Orpheus Choir – the “Ambassadors of Song” – in Belper. It was a night to remember.

This September, the Morriston Boyos have invited The Dalesmen to sing with them in the Welsh valleys, alongside the brilliant Côr Curiad Ladies Choir. Dad was so excited for this trip – a musical exchange he’d hoped for ever since that magical night in Belper.

More than anything, Dad’s biggest wish was that every Dalesman who wanted to go would be able to – regardless of personal circumstances.

He knew the cost – coaches, hotels, meals, a few “lemonades” – could be a barrier for some. So instead of flowers, he asked if donations be made to help subsidise the cost for those who might not otherwise afford to go.

He pledged £500 to start this fund & now, we invite family, friends, and fellow music lovers to contribute in his memory.

Please help us fulfil Norman’s wish:

To make sure no Dalesman is left behind on this special trip.
