Story

If you are incensed by the anti immigration excesses being played out at the borders of Europe and the United States, then maybe it is time to do something about how we treat migrants subject to immigration control living in the UK.

Migrants subject to immigration control often have the condition of No Recourse to Public funds (NRPF), which denies access them to social housing and welfare benefits.

The welfare system is available to those who are unemployed/under employed or homeless due to domestic abuse, sexual violence, unemployment, illness. Would you want to deny the safety net of the welfare system to those who need it ? I hope the answer is No!

Yet, there is a section of our society mostly women and children who are denied access to the welfare system purely because of their immigration status. The challenges of life do not discriminate based on where you come from but we as a society have deemed that people with NRPF do not deserve this assistance in crisis.

Our collective blindness and ignorance of the condition of NRPF, forces women and children with NRPF to continue to live in abusive and violent situations, often being denied access to services and safety. They are told to return home as though a migrant is a holiday maker going home from a week in the sun.

When someone migrates,we migrate with the intention of creating a positive future for ourselves, whether their vision for the future lies here in the UK or back in our countries of origin or elsewhere. This vision involves living a positive, safe and rich life for ourselves and the society we are currently living in. A crisis can interrupt that, and when that happens we should be able to access the safety afforded to all citizens of a society which currently migrants with No Recourse to Public funds cant.

Funds raised with this appeal will be shared equally between three charities that work with women, children and other people with No Recourse to Pulblic Funds: Shakti Women's Aid, Central Scotland Regional Equality Council, Ubuntu Women's Shelter
