Nyabyeya Primary school is in rural Western Uganda, close to the Budongo Forest. I have worked in this area since 2007, first to study wild chimpanzees and more recently to study child development. We have an amazing local team there who enable us to make a real difference.

Our project, the Budongo Families Project, has partnered with Nyabyeya Primary School to support the education and wellbeing of local children. In this extremely poor region, most children have no access to educational materials or opportunities. As Secondary School is not free in Uganda, most families cannot afford to send their children to school after Primary

So far, we have been equipping the school with its own library, paying the salary for a librarian, providing study materials for vulnerable pupils and sponsoring pupils to progress to Secondary School. This has had an amazing impact on these children and their families as well as inspiring other students and have given the whole community hope! We need your help to keep going!

This month, I am going to Budongo with my mother Julia Clay and my son. We are visiting the Primary School and we are reaching out for your help! Your donation, however big or small, will have a direct impact on these children’s education and opportunities.

Currently, the School needs a new set of shelves for library books (£55) as well as materials for the most vulnerable families. We are also seek donations to support at least school leavers who have been identified as most promising to progress to Secondary School.

£335 supports 1 child for one year for school fees (covers boarding school fees at Kinyara High School, best school in the area, for 3 semesters) plus approx £300 for living fees and requirements (uniform, study materials, clothing, mattress, washing, boarding requirements)
