Story
Dakin community is located at a hinter land adjacent to Kabusa district of the FCT Abuja, Nigeria. Its inhabitants are predominantly smallholder farmers. It has only one access road through a crossing stream of about 0.5 metres during the dry season. The community lacks most basic amenities such as school, portable water, electricity and health care facility. Prior to establishment of St. Mary's community school, the nearest school was 2 km away which made it impossible for the children to go to school.
A compassionate couple who own a farm in the community saw their pain and graciously built a temporary structure which is now used as a school, and is functioning with a total of 61 children in attendance. These children are taught in 3 classrooms (each of about 6 by 8 feet in dimension.)The school has been supported by my non-profit, I Can Read And Write Literacy Initiative (ICRAW), and other kind donations from individuals around the community. Children who couldn't read and write are now gradually learning how to read and write. The school has many needs, a few of which are furniture, learning materials, training and stipend for volunteer teachers, audiovisual learning aids, a toilet facility, WASH materials, food for hungry pupils as many of them come to school without having any meal before they arrive. We are struggling to keep these children learning as there is a rapidly increasing food & education crisis in Nigeria with very little support from the public and private organisations in the country.
The children in the Games village IDP camp is a 2nd group of beneficiaries that ICRAW is supporting in Abuja. By raising funds for the IDP children,
we ensure that they have basic learning materials and food during the learning times.
We hereby humbly appeal to you to compassionately come to the aid of these young children, to support their welfare and give them a renewed hope of a future they need to explore.
Thank you.
