Story

Our mission is to stop Centre Parcs development of Oldhouse Warren, a large area of ancient woodland in West Sussex.

This ancient woodland sits in Worth Forest within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB). It is situated between Balcombe and Crawley in West Sussex. The proposed development adjoins a 'Site of Special Scientific Interest' (SSSI). Center Parcs plan to develop 553 acres of Oldhouse Warren to build a huge holiday resort. Our mission is to stop this destructive development and to raise awareness of the diversity of habitats and species present.

Plans for the site include 900 lodges, shops, roads, car parks and restaurants as well as leisure facilities such as a water park and subtropical swimming complex. They aim to cater for 9000 visitors each week.

Such a development would rip the heart out of Worth Forest and destroy the integrity of the largest block of ancient woodland in the middle of the Wealden Vale. Oldhouse Warren is a truly precious part of the mid-Sussex landscape; we know that it is incredibly biodiverse with rare birdlife ; veteran trees; relic heath and marsh; mosses, liverworts and ferns; and a huge array of fungi.

This development must not be allowed to happen. ANOB’s and Ancient Woodlands are highly protected under the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and the Mid Sussex District Plan. If planning is approved, a precedent would be set, putting ALL Ancient Woodland at risk everywhere.

Protect Oldhouse Warren is a group of local people who are committed to trying to stop this. We plan a wide range of activities to raise awareness among surrounding communities and to be prepared to challenge an application for planning permission when it is submitted. We need funds to develop a campaign website, venue hire for meetings and information sessions, publicity material (leaflets, banners, posters and films), and volunteer expenses. We are extremely grateful for any contribution (the group's accounts can be made available on request).
