Story

We believe that everyone should have the chance to feel the benefits of the sea and talk openly about mental health without being judged. Our aim is to break down the stigma surrounding mental health and make it easier for people to speak out and to know that it’s ok to not be ok.

Just like physical health, we ALL have mental health too. Now more than ever, it’s crucial to look after our mental health. In the challenging times we are experiencing with Covid, mental health issues are on the rise and it’s very easy to feel isolated with our problems. We hope to spread the message that nobody is alone, we aim to bring our community together to acknowledge our difficulties and make it easier for people to talk.

One of our attendees said "There is something so special about the sea and for the few hours I’m at One Wave all my troubles ebb away with the tide”.

Depending on the sea conditions, we surf, body board, paddle board, kayak or simply just have a dip in the sea to wash our worries away. Research has shown that ‘blue therapy’ is incredibly beneficial for both mental and physical health conditions along with general wellbeing. We wear fluorescent clothing to make an invisible issue visible.

The joy of being out on the water in a group setting has given attendees a way to laugh, open up and communicate more freely. There’s something about the companionship along with time spent in the salt water that really is quite magical, the smiles and laughter speak for themselves.

Sadly we no longer have access to the kit we had been using so we are looking for funding to allow us to continue offering the same experience. All money raised will be used to fund equipment such at wetsuits, body boards and paddle boards to enable us to give those of us experiencing mental health difficulties the opportunity to enjoy the sea in a safe environment.

There's no therapy like a good dose of vitamin sea!

Thanks in advance for any help you can give, every penny will be so gratefully received and spent wisely to make a real difference.

Evie and Char xx
