Operation Drawstring...

Christmas is fast approaching, the weather is getting colder, the days shorter, and the number of homeless people/rough sleepers on the streets in Birmingham seems to be increasing. Operation Drawstring is a social action campaign with the aim to spread festive cheer to the rough sleepers/homeless on the streets of Birmingham over the holiday period through the distribution of filled drawstring bags of essentials and a few luxuries.

The campaign launched in 2015, and with the help of a small group of volunteers we successfully bagged and handed out around 250 bags.

This year we aim to grow the campaign to 500 bags. I personally have noticed homeless people on the High Street in Solihull and other parts of Birmingham. We'll focus on the city itself but we hope to have enough supplies to distribute to the surrounding areas also.

October will be the month of fundraising, we need funds to secure storage for the bags/items, and also to purchase spare bags for any ad hoc donations we receive. We will then collect bags/items through the month of November and come December we'll have a couple of days packing up the bags before the main distribution period over the final few weeks leading to Christmas.
