The 2025 Cause

This year Operation MadLad will be supporting Kidney Care Uk, a wonderful organisation that has given a great deal of help to the father of one of our members.

In 2020 Dave (TJ's father) started feeling unwell and was originally thought to be a chest infection but steadily became worse and worse. On arrival at hopsital, Dave's Potasium levels were found to be dangerously high, ironicly Dave had been eating far too many Bananas as was the only thing he was able to keep down.

After a considable ammount of tests, Dave was diagnosed with Stage 5 Kidney failure, meaning that his Kidneys would never recover and would require Dialysis for the rest of his life.

Following Dave's diagnosis, he was passed information about Kidney Care UK and had this to share about his experiences with the charity.

"Kidney Care UK has been a lifeline on a couple of occasions for me and will no doubt be again in the future. I have taken advantage of the grants for kidney patients twice now, once when I first started my at home dialysis in December 2020. I was doing it overnight in bed for 12 hours which meant spending more time in bed than usual, our old mattress was on lots last legs, Kidney Care UK bought us a new mattress at no cost to is so I could have my dialysis in comfort. We are able to use them once every 12 months but we hadn't needed anything until this last year 2024 when our fridge freezer broke, they bought a brand new one for us, more efficient and better than our old one too so it should last us many years. It's nice to know that if something breaks or you need something you can't afford they are there to help, it's made a huge difference to us as we would not be able to replace such things without going into debt with finance or catalogues etc or buying a cheap 2nd hand one which won't last. With me not being able to work and my wife being my primary carer it's been tough but thanks to Kidney Care UK we've had a bit less to worry about."

About Kidney Care UK

The charity provides support for more than 100 patients every week and invest over £3 million each year in patient grants.

They provide practical and emotional support, funding patient-centred research projects and improving care services, having invested more than £10m in the NHS over the past decade to improve services for patients, funding renal social workers, play therapists to support paediatric patients and residential weekends for young adults transitioning from youth to adulthood.

They work at a national and government level to improve health and care services for kidney patients through our campaigning activity.

They ensure that the patient voice is at the heart of national decision-making in kidney services and have a Patient Advisory Group which actively supports us in all our work.
