In rural Africa, it has always been a struggle, however the Covid-19 pandemic has created greater strife. This has largely been through lockdowns and trade being stifled. It has led to empty stomachs, use of little savings or the threat of hard earned assets needing selling off (e.g. land, the goats that give manure & offspring etc). You Can Africa (a charitable crowd funding initiative which Dave Rutherford is a founder of) have always promoted an opportunity not aid approach to the 'how' we help - it has proven profound in trying times, 2021 included, i.e. people have been much able to handle the strain themselves. So, we are listening to the communities and are gearing up with further support that gives the man or woman the fishing rod (opportunity) not the fish (aid). We have found people want to help themselves and those that pioneer breaking the cycle of poverty, in turn start a ripple effect that positively influences others in their community - it is a dignified and inspiring way of helping, which also children primarily see their own parents helping them (which is an education in itself). Of course, aid has it's place and Covid-19 ticks the box to help via 'fish giving', however that is still not our main focus. We hope you are inspired to help and can do so.
