Story

We are trying to raise £7,210 for a purpose built flight aviary.

What we do

Orangery Retirement Home for Pigeons is Scotland’s largest pigeon-only long-term sanctuary, caring for elderly, disabled, injured and surrendered pigeons who have nowhere else to go.

We are entirely self-funded from our own wages, and have already invested over £10,000 to give these vulnerable birds luxury forever homes, gentle rehabilitation, enrichment, safety and love. Many slowly regain limited flight, but need protected outdoor space to stay healthy and confident.

Why we need your help

Our flock keeps growing as more birds arrive needing lifelong care, and many of them have mobility issues, sight loss, neurological problems or age-related decline. They cannot safely free-fly outdoors — predators, disorientation and injury are real risks.

To meet their needs, we must build a 40ft x 9ft purpose-built flight aviary: a safe, sheltered environment where they can stretch their wings, build strength, socialise and enjoy the outdoors without fear.

What the new aviary will give them

A calming, enriching space designed specifically for disabled, senior and recovering pigeons, including:

• A gentle-entry wading pool for birds with balance or mobility issues

• Ornamental grasses for natural foraging and nest material

• Bark-chipping lounge area for soft, warm outdoor resting

• Turfed zones for exploration, stimulation and foraging

• Potted trees, perches and rope bridges for shade, shelter and confidence-building movement

This aviary will finally allow our residents to enjoy a natural, dignified life outdoors.

Why metal, not wood

Scotland’s weather is unforgiving. A metal aviary ensures safety and longevity by resisting rot, damp and storms, offering stronger predator protection, and keeping long-term costs down so more funding goes to the birds themselves. We will use only bird-safe, non-toxic materials throughout.

What your donation will buy

• Bird-safe mesh

• Durable metal framing & roof panels

• Secure, predator-proof foundations

• Transport & installation

Every donation — whether £5 or £500 — brings us closer to giving these gentle birds a safe place to fly again.
